Moscow subway explosions killed at least 38 people and more than 25 injured in Moscow metro at the rush hour this morning. The first explosion was in central Moscow at the Lubyanka station at 07:56 (03:56 GMT). Less than an hour later at 08:38 (04:38 GMT) came the second blast at Park Kultury station. Above the station is located the successor to the Soviet-era KGB, The headquarters of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), which is just yards away from the Kremlin.

Irina Andrianova, russian emergencies ministry spokeswoman, said the first explosion happened when the train stopped at the Lubyanka station. She also said “The blast hit the second carriage of a metro train that stopped at Lubyanka”.

No group asumed immediately the responsibility for the attacks, caried out by a suicide bomber, but suspicion is the Chechen militants and other Russia’s North Caucasus groups are to blame. Russia is fighting against a a growing Islamist movement in the north.

This is not the first time Russia get hit by an underground terrorist attack, the last one occured in 2004. Another explosion, killed 39 people and wounded another 150 in 2004 and it was later claimed by the Chechen terrorists.
