U Haul Truck Caused NYPD To Shut Down RFK Bridge
On Wednesday night, there was a truck abandoned by his driver on New York’s RFK Bridge. Police feared of a bomb attack, causing the authorities to close all the lanes to inspect the vehicle. The abandoned U-Haul truck caused a traffic nightmare in Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx but no bomb was found.
According to witnesses, there was a traffic jam for hours on the former Triborough Bridge as NYPD bomb squad units moved hurriedly to check the abandoned truck.
The bomb squad investigated the abandoned truck with the use of a police vehicle that is equipped with x-ray equipment. It was inspected but police found nothing inside. NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said “all clear” after the NYPD bomb squad inspected the vehicle.
The incident happened at around 10 pm, when the bridge toll operator saw the driver of the truck running away from his vehicle. The operator then went directly to the U-Haul rental truck and smelled gas. However, there was no reason given why the man ran away from his vehicle according to Paul Browne.
A bridge authority officer approached the truck, inspected the vehicle and found nothing; instead he detected a strong gas odor. For precautions, all civilian vehicles were directed off the bridge by authorities and it was closed in all directions.
The abandoned U Haul truck was left on a ramp leading from the Bronx section of the Bruckner Expressway heading to Manhattan and Queens. NYPD and Tunnel Authority officers were on the scene to redirect traffic as the inspection goes on.
The RFK Bridge was shut down for three hours because of the concern over the abandoned truck with Arizona plates. Because of the failed car bomb attack on Times Square, the authorities were anxious with the possible bomb threat of the abandoned vehicle.
“There is no explosive device of any kind” said Browne. “Police are now trying to establish the identity of the driver.” He added.
