Twitter subscribers flock Japan, Softbank intervenes
Softbank, the third largest mobile communications company in Japan, is making Twitter more accessible in the country. It is ready to ship 14 mobile models with built-in applications that will link users to the microblogging site.
There is an outstanding growth of Twitter usage in Japan which makes it a hot spot for investment. Part of its success is media exposure with celebrities getting hooked on the site. Around 14 percent of the million tweets received in a day are keyed in by the Japanese. The percentage of internet users in the county is about 12.3 percent, higher than in the U.S. From 521,000 users in April 2009, it reached 7.52 million in March. Twitter is catching up with Japan’s social networking site, Mixi, with 10.8 million users.
“It’s become one of our biggest and most important countries,” said Twitter CEO Evan Williams. It makes Japan one of the fastest-growing markets today.
