Tornadoes and Severe Storms Hit Oklahoma
Two tornadoes touched down in the area of Oklahoma during the height of rush hour Monday afternoon. Crews spotted a funnel cloud about fifteen miles south of Oklahoma in Norman. There was only one minor injury reposted but emergency managers fear the count may rise as first responders fan out across the state. Grant County Emergency Management Director Max Hess said that the man scraped his elbow when the winds knocked him down as he was trying to get to his cellar. Hess also said numerous power poles have been knocked down along Oklahoma 11 and baseball-sized hail knocked out windows in county equipment and poked a hole through a county building roof. Michelann Ooten, Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman, sated that the agency is monitoring the weather and that emergency management directors statewide will be ready to respond whenever they will be needed.
The storms were part of a violent weather system that produced twisters in Kansas and in other parts of Oklahoma. The state had strong storms roll through the Midwest that brought hail, heavy rain and strong winds. In Kansas, the most serious damage was reported in Belmont where several homes were destroyed in the town east of Topeka and widespread power outages were reported. Oklahoma Gas and Electric has reported of more than eight hundred power outages in Kremlin and Medford.
