Brazil and Turkey reached and agreement with Iran, world’s fifth-largest oil exporter, in the procedure for a nuclear fuel swap amid the Western push for nuclear sanctions. Ahmet Davutoglu replied, “Yes, it has been reached after almost 18 hours of negotiations,” when he was asked whether there was an agreement made on the nuclear fuel swap deal. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to go to Tehran last Sunday to take part in talks on Iran’s nuclear program after the possibility of using Turkey as a location for the fuel swap. The state started enrichment in February to create fuel for the research reactor itself which caused Iran to be closer in making weapons-grade material.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva went to Tehran to help mediate. UN saw the visit as the probable last chance of Iran before new sanctions would be placed against them. Lula said that Brazil would finance a billion Euros of food exports to Iran for the next five years to make the trade between the two countries les dependent on foreign banks. Behrouz Alishiri, head of an Iranian government body, stated that trade between Iran and Brazil could increase nearly five-fold to some $10 billion.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said last Friday that Lula’s mediation effort would fail. President Dmitry Medvedev stated that Lula would have about thirty percent on the odds of his success in his visit to Iran. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev both have stated they back Lula’s efforts to resolve the long-running, high-stakes stalemate. Turkey and Brazil have offered to mediate to find a resolution to Iran. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated during the meeting with Lula, “Your trip enjoys a special importance due to the onset of serious cooperation between the two great nations and also because many countries are awaiting our added cooperation.” Iran’s most powerful authority Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Lula, “America is angry over the proximity of independent countries like Iran and Brazil…That is why they made a fuss ahead of your trip to Iran.”
