Nissan Leaf Review, Specs, Price : Now Manufacturing In Sunderland
Japanese car maker Nissan, unveiled the new electric car – Nissan Leaf – which has been planned to be manufactured at the Sunderland Plant. Production will be commencing at the plant in 2013 which has confirmed hundreds of jobs. Some 50,000 Nissan Leaf hatchbacks which will be entirely running on lithium-ion batteries would be manufactured from the production line in a year. The Sunderland Plant has been tagged as UK’s largest car factory which employs 4,000 people.
The Japanese company revealed that Nissan Leaf would be the world’s first affordable, zero-emission, mass produced car available. The United Kingdom would be the third country to start the production of the electric car after Japan and the United States. The car was first unveiled on August 2, 2009 and is tagged as a medium ranged car with a capacity for five persons. The first electric car by Nissan is to go on sale in late 2010 with already booked advanced orders.
The car is powered by laminated compact lithium-ion batteries which have the capacity to generate power output of 90kW whiles the electric motor delivers 80kW. When fully charged with a quick charger it takes just 30-40 minutes, with the car expected to cover a range of 100 miles. A normal charger from 200V home outlet would take approximately eight hours to be fully charged.
The V-shaped design features LED headlights which are cleverly fitted to split and redirect airflow away from the door mirrors which also helps in wind noise. The headlights consume just 10 percent electricity compared to conventional lamps.
The car is fitted with an intelligent IT system which is connected to a global data center, providing support, information and entertainment for drivers. A monitor has been placed at the top of the car’s dashboard which displays information such as the remaining power, reachable area and nearby charging stations. Another great feature fitted in the car is the ability to use mobile phones to turn on air-conditioning and set charging functions.
