An early morning massive rockslide in Glenwood Canyon hit the communication on Interstate 70 in both directions thus disrupting the road communication between Dotsero and Glenwood Springs that forced a lengthy diversion of nearly 150 miles of cross state traffic.

According to Colorado Department of Transport the huge rockslide punctured quite few large holes and divots in the two bridges on the west side of the Hanging Lake Tunnels. These two bridges carry the I-70 over the Colorado River and Union Pacific Railroad. The average daily traffic of Glenwood Canyon on I-70 is 20,000 a day and CDOT officials confirm that this hit would really hit this huge traffic on the day and could result in more complicated traffic issues and jam packed condition than what has happened in the year 2004 in the same location.

During the year 2004 the damage was mainly on the Westbound lanes and the authorities were able to restore traffic in the two ways in just 31 hours by managing and shifting the vehicles in one lane, however this time both the lanes were hit. And the full repair of the road in 2004 took nearly 2 months.

Now both the eastbound and west bound structures were hit and caused significant damage to the road. The CDOT has not been able to give any relief statement and they are accessing the situation to decide their course of action.

The pictures of reports on various sources show that some boulders of the rock slide were the size of tractors or semi-tractors and such huge rocks would definitely cause such stretch of damage. One hole in the westbound lane was estimated to be nearly 20 ft by 10 ft and the eastbound lane has some huge holes of five by five ft.
