Low-Oxygen Zones Continue to Spread

S 8 Mar 2010 Ocean Floor Low Oxygen Zones Continue to SpreadAccording to scientists, low-oxygen zones in our oceans continue to spread. This change is primarily brought about by climate change that’s happening globally. If this phenomenon continues, sea life can be disrupted which can eventually affect the entire ecosystem.

Due to low-oxygen, crab carcasses are littering the ocean floors of some areas in the state of Washington and Oregon. Also, colonies of sea anemones have been destroyed. Furthermore, the growth of certain kinds of bacteria continue to rise as this condition is conducive for their growth.

Low-oxygen areas, or areas of hypoxia, have already been existent in the Earth’s oceans namely the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian. However, these areas are getting bigger, rapidly expanding towards the Pacific Northwest. Scientists are saying that the depletion of oxygen over the last several years has been striking. For some parts, the level of oxygen has decreased by 20 percent over the past 25 years while for some it has gone down by more than 30 percent within the same period.

The spread of these low-oxygen areas could be stopped if our ocean’s circulation was normal. However, as the Earth keeps on getting warmer, the surface of the ocean also becomes warmer preventing “deeper waters” that are oxygen-depleted from recharging. Scientists believe that species that live in the bottom of the ocean are at the highest risk of being affected by this.

  1. SomethingFishy says:

Did you know that water itself is two parts hydrogen to one part of oxygen ? The above story is chemically impossible and all kinds of false. What will the fake “scientists” create next ?

  2. Bud Man says:

Free oxygen (O2) dissolved in seawater. That’s what fish breathe.

We breathe free oxygen (also O2) in the air. There’s water vapor in the air but we don’t get oxygen from it.

It’s not sensible to talk about “fake ‘scientists’” when you don’t know the basics. Ask before you criticize.
