Earthquake Hits South Mariana Islands

mariana Earthquake Hits South Mariana IslandsOn August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rolled through Mariana Islands in the Wesern Pacific Ocean. Kuala Lumpur was shocked with the tremor at 5:20 am as told by the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

According to the authority, the epicenter of the quake which hit Mariana Islands was in Davao, Philippines, 1,484 Km northeast from the city and 2, 703 km northeast of Lahad Datu is Sabah.

The department said that right after earthquake, no tsunami signal was issued.

Davao City, Philippines felt the earthquake with 5.3 magnitude. The Philippines Institute of Seismology said that the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Philippine Sea, 121 km away from the city and 92 km southeast of Mati, where the earthquake was experienced greatly.

Also, no tsunami alert was raised in the country after the jolt.

The Philippines is considered as the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire”, thus, a lot of seismic and volcanic activities are experienced in the country.

No injuries and death cases were reported in Mariana Islands and in the Philippines. No infrastructure and buildings were devastated.

Despite the strong magnitude of teh earthquake, surprisingly, Saipan did not feel the tremor. Saipan is the largest chain in the Northern Mariana Islands chain.

Mariana Islands like the Philippines is also an Archipelago in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. It made up of two US territories which are the Commonwelath of the Northern Mariana Island and Guam.
