Donations for Chile Relief a Little Slow as toll rise to 799
As Donations for Haiti is still in flow for the earthquake victims who were triggered by a month old earthquake, but the donations for the fresh hit quake in Chile has been little slow from sources and charities according to American Red Cross.
The Chile donations have not been satisfactory and to the level as expected from what were seen during Haiti quake say Mike Odneal, executive director of the mid-Missouri chapter of the American Red Cross. But he is positive and feels that as more and more news on the Chile tremor spreads the spike in donations can be expected. The flow of donations is very much required at this stage to recovery and restoration of those who lost property, lives and sources of income.
The Red Cross has pledged for nearly $25,000 relief in Chile and the pledge would be increase as donations and need for the restoration would increase. Besides the Red Cross, the Salvation Army too complains fewer donations for Chile relief as compared to Haiti. Cyndy Chapman who is the director of development said that though the donation is expected to rise but the current amount is very less compared to those that flew for Haiti.
Cyndy Chapman said, “Haiti has been going on much longer, so many more people have sent in checks for Haitian relief than for Chilean relief. We expect once people realize the extent of the damage in Chile, they will understand that those people need as much help as the people in Haiti.”
Meanwhile there are reports that the toll of earthquake has increased to 799 according to the latest figures released by national emergency office. Of these the most fatalities occurred in the coast of Maule where nearly 587 people are reported to be dead till Wednesday. And because of the public riot and robbery a curfew was called on City of Concepcion by the authorities which make it quite difficult for general aiding agencies to carry the relief operations.
