British Lawmaker Stephen Timms Stabbed at Constituent Meeting
Stephen Creswell Timms, a 54 year old member of the Parliament for the constituency of East Ham and the former financial secretary to the Treasury under former Prime Minister Tony Blair, was stabbed Friday by a woman he claims not to be acquainted with. Labour Party officials said that Timms was treated at Royal London Hospital after the attack. They continued stating, “He has received visitors and is in good spirits.” Most British lawmakers hold a weekly surgery when constituents are able to seek advice or state grievances about their concerns. A Scotland Yard official said, “Police and ambulance attended. He has been taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
Unmesh Desai said that Timms would be kept in the hospital overnight for observation and treatment. The lawmaker was holding his regular consultation with constituents when a woman approached him, Desai said. A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police said a 21 year old woman was arrested in connection with the incident.
Nigel Jones, a Liberal Democrat Lawmaker who survived an attack last January 2000, stated “It brought back horrible memories of 10 years ago. I just hope Stephen is going to be ok. My advice to him is take your time to get properly healed – not just the physical injuries, but also the mental injuries as well, because his confidence will have taken a knock.”
