BlackBerry Codes Given to Saudi by RIM
Research In Motion (RIM) has agreed to share the user codes of BlackBerry to help the authorities of Saudi to watch its messenger, according to the sources. Sources have said, RIM has agreed to share the unique pin number and doe for each BlackBerry registered there with Saudi. This code will help the authorities to read the encrypted text via messenger service, messenger service is completely different from email on the device.
This system would give access to the authorities of Saudi to RIM’s main server, but this will limit to only communications to and from users of Saudi. “I would imagine other countries are going to want to be treated in a similar way, whatever that way happens to be,” said Todd Coupland at CIBC World Markets in Toronto.
Other than Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and India have also asked for the access to encrypted BlackBerry communications citing national security concerns. But RIM has not decided anything about that yet. BlackBerry messenger is very popular among younger people and especially bachelors. And being an Islamic society, Saudi restricts contacts between men and women if they don’t know each other.
