2010 Chilean Earthquake Have Shifted Earth’s Axis

earthquake earth axis 2010 Chilean Earthquake Have Shifted Earths AxisNASA, California – Richard Gross of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has stated that the Earthquake that happened in Chile on February 27, 2010 have shifted Earth’s Axis. The 8.8 magnitude of the said earthquake according to the geophysicist could have moved the planet’s axis about 8 centimeters or 2.7 milliarcseconds.

The recent Chilean earthquake has altered the mass distribution of Earth that affects its axis. This was due to the shifting of huge rocks and has resulted to a change of how the planet rotates. Planet’s rotation as studied even in early schooling is known to determine the length of a day. This phenomenon has shortened the day of about 1.26 microseconds.

This was testified by Geophysicist-Gross to the Bloomberg news agency.”The length of the day should have got shorter by 1.26 microseconds.”

The said tremor’s effect is different from what was experience in Haiti last January 12. Though the latter has a devastating magnitude of 7.0, it did not affect the Earth’s axis as the plates that caused tremor slides past one another. The 2010 Chilean quake is similar to 2004 Sumatran quake that has shifted the Earth’s axis by 2.3 milliarcseconds.

The recent Chilean earthquake that have shifted Earth’s axis have resulted to an adjustment in the length of a day.
